Christ Has Already Won

Sheologians has been critiqued for “only posting” about “negative” things. I learned in a counseling course never to use words like “always” and “never” because they are rarely ever truthful. It’s true that we do post about “negative” things often, but we also post happy/encouraging things as well. Always/never doesn’t accurately apply.

Nevertheless, this critique has me thinking when I hit the post button, “Is this just negative? What benefit is there in posting this?” To be sure, asking such a question is a good exercise, and I am thankful that the aforementioned commenters have put this question on the map, specifically in reference to Sheologians as a whole. However, if I may, I have a word for those with anxiety when they look at the world and the sad things in it, and I hope I can lovingly and graciously share it here.

Several days ago I saw an article about the near eradication of children born with Down Syndrome in Iceland. My heart broke. I reached for the share button. I didn’t push it, because frankly, there is no other way to describe this article than disturbing, and we just share so much “negative stuff”. The fact that children with down syndrome are almost always murdered by virtue of their genetics is a terrible, heartbreaking thing. This article is decidedly about eugenics and it does NOT call it by name. This should grieve us. An entire population is treated as subhuman because it does not meet a certain standard, and that is demonic.

Yet, here we are. We live in a time where you can be put to death before you leave your mother’s womb for any reason, and for not fitting a preferred genetic profile in particular. I don’t wanna be a broken record here. I don’t wanna be reductive. But only Christians have the remedy for this horrific blight, and it is the gospel.

Dear Christian, don’t look away from this. Don’t insulate yourself. This is me publicly repenting for not immediately sharing an article out of fear of shaking someone’s safe space. I know it’s hard to think about. I know it’s hard to look at. But don’t be afraid. All is not lost. This awfulness should drive us to our knees in prayer, into Scripture, and importantly, into action. We are exhorted to “rescue those being led to the slaughter.” To be bold and unafraid. Do not hide your face from these things, and if you are tempted to be fearful and anxious in the face of them, remember that Jesus has already won. All of his enemies are being made as a footstool under His feet. You belong to King Jesus and the victory is already His. The world is battling. They are unashamed to murder babies and call it “reproductive rights”. You are free to fight the good fight without fear of this evil. Cling to God’s promises, pick up your cross, and follow Jesus in obedience.

So, I’ve done a heart check. Why do I share the articles or quotes that I share? What is the purpose? Truthfully, I share what I share not out of a desire to create fear, but in the spirit of Ephesians 5:11: “Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.” An integral part to defeating darkness is exposing it. Social media can make it more difficult to find the line between exposing something and fixating on something. Let’s grant that. But let’s also not bow out of the dirty work altogether. If we won’t stand up to the world and expose their foolishness, are we really fighting the “good fight”?

The church is made up of many parts. Not everyone is called to the same thing. But we are called to be able to give a defense for the hope that is within us, and to be salt and light to the world. Fear, anxiety, not clinging to God’s promises, not being obedient, they are all ways for us to lose our saltiness. Rest in Christ’s finished work, and be bold.
